No. 1 Star: Teemu Selanne, Anaheim Ducks The ageless wonder scored both of the Ducks' goals in their 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings, clinching a playoff berth for Anaheim. His wrister with 14:06 left in the game held up, thanks to a 23-save effort from Dan Ellis. Selanne will join Gordie Howe and Johnny Bucyk as the only players in NHL history to "play an entire season at age 40 or older with more points than games played," according to the AP. The fans chanted "one more year" after the game; who can blame them? No. 2 Star: Jeff Skinner, Carolina Hurricanes The rookie opened the scoring in this critical game with his 31st goal of the season, and added two assists in the Canes' 6-1 win over the Atlanta Thrashers, moving Carolina into a tie with the New York Rangers for the No. 8 seed. The Hurricanes can make the playoffs if they defeat Tampa Bay on Saturday night or if the Devils beat the Rangers on Saturday afternoon. No. 3 Star: Pekka Rinne, Nashville PredatorsThe Predators keeper made 44 saves as Nashville clinched a playoff spot with a 4-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Said Coach Barry Trotz after the game: "I would say he's probably the best goaltender in the National Hockey League." Patric Hornqvist had two goals and an assist in the win.Honorable mention: The Buffalo Sabres clinched a playoff berth with a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, as Nathan Gerbe scored twice (including a goal of the year candidate) and Thomas Vanek completed a 3-point night with an OT goal. Danny Briere scored goal No. 33 in the loss. Ryan Miller returned for Buffalo in the third period after missing the previous four games. … The Dallas Stars remained alive in the West with a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche. Brenden Morrow scored his 32nd for the game-winner, and Mike Ribeiro had a goal and an assist. … The Chicago Blackhawks remained two points up on the Stars with a 4-2 win at the Detroit Red Wings, getting first-period goals from Brent Seabrook, Ben Smith (his first NHL goal) and Brian Campbell. Marian Hossa had a goal and a helper. … Shane Doan and Radim Vrbata each had a goal and an assist as the Phoenix Coyotes clinched a playoff spot with a 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks. Joe Thornton picked up his 1,000th NHL point in the loss. … Oddity for the Minnesota Wild: Mikko Koivu and Pierre-Marc Bouchard assisted on all three of their goals in a 3-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers, sweeping the season series against the Oil. … Vinny Lecavalier scored two goals, including one on a penalty shot, as the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Florida Panthers, 4-2. … In their first game on Long Island since that nasty game in February that saw multiple suspensions, the Pittsburgh Penguins topped the New York Islanders in the shootout, 4-3. Chris Kunitz had the game-winner. Travis Hamonic scored with 35 seconds left to force OT for the Isles, who received two goals

11 Vote(s)

There haven't been a large number of plays this season that immediately demand goal of the year consideration. But this long-distance spin-o-rama backhander from Nathan Gerbe of the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night demands it: The Sabres needed a point to clinch a playoff berth, and this goal - his second of the night - at 10:03 of the third period tied the game at 3-3, which is where it stayed until Thomas Vanek's OT goal won it against the Philadelphia Flyers.Said Gerbe of the goal, via the Buffalo News:"I want to be a guy who scores goals and scores big goals, and for me to do that is pretty special," Gerbe said."I thought it was going to hit the bar and go out, so I was kind of just praying that it would hit and go in. That's a great feeling. To come out this way and get the win is special for them and special for us."So do we have Dan Carcillo of the Flyers to thank for this effort? Buffalo Sabres Coach Lindy Ruff said in his postgame press conference that the Flyers agitator patted the diminutive Gerbe (he's 5-foot-5) on the head to taunt him:"[The goal] was really special after Carcillo was pattin' him on the head there, by the bench. He was pattin' him on top of the head, and then a shift later Gerbe scored. After the game, I gave Gerbs a little pat on the back myself. It's nice to see. He got under a guy's skin that's got under a lot of other guys' skin and scored the biggest goal of the year for us."The spin, the placement of the puck, the context … all of it combines to produce one of the better goals of the season.

16 Vote(s)

The last time the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Islanders met on a Friday night at Nassau Coliseum, it resulted in 346 penalty minutes, three suspensions and a $100,000 fine for the Islanders. It also featured 15 fighting majors, including a bout between Eric Godard and Trevor Gillies, who was eventually suspended nine games for injuring Eric Tangradi (and then mocking him). The teams met again on Friday night, and Gillies and Godard dropped the gloves 8:59 into the game.Gillies and Godard were given five minutes for fighting and 10-minute misconducts. At 11:57 of the first period, Arron Asham of the Penguins fought Zenon Konopka, who you may remember threatened to rip his Mario Lemieux poster off his wall after Lemieux threatened to leave the NHL over the Feb. 11 brawl.Konopka received five for fighting, two for instigating and a 10-minute misconduct. Asham was given five for fighting.Credit referees Francois St. Laurent and Eric Furlatt for gaining some semblance of control during a first period that featured 13 different penalties. But we're sure these players knew that the Wheel of Justice was ready to spin on any deplorable play tonight on the Island.

20 Vote(s)

Pretend, just for a moment, that The Hydrant Incident never happened. That we never heard of Rachel Uchitel or any of the "transgressions" that followed. That Tiger Woods was still a happily married man, as far as any of us knew. That there was no need for a swing change or self-examination or Buddhist bracelets or wooden apology statements or any of that. Just for a moment, imagine what that would be like.Rory McIlroy sits three strokes ahead of Woods heading into the weekend at Augusta. If we were all blissfully ignorant of what we've learned the last 18 months, is there a person alive who'd bet on McIlroy's chances this weekend? Not even McIlroy's family.Of course, we can no more dismiss what's happened to Woods since that Thanksgiving night than we can stroll up to Augusta National and sneak in a quick 18 Sunday afternoon. But Friday's definitive 66, combined with Thursday's good-enough 71, Woods is indisputably in the proverbial mix this year.Certainly, it could all go south in a hurry. Woods has a way of turning gold into lead these days, posting at least one lumpy, misshapen round per tourney. A +2, +3 over the weekend isn't out of the question, and the way McIlroy and those around him are playing, that might be enough to keep Woods out of any realistic discussion about a fifth green jacket. The conventional wisdom holds that the intimidation factor of "Tiger on the prowl," to trot out a hack little phrase once again, is long gone, that the younger generation grew up facing Woods on video games and thus doesn't quail in terror at the sight of him. Heck, McIlroy said as much last year when he indicated he "fancies his chances" against Woods head-to-head.Saying it is one thing. Doing it is quite another. How will McIlroy and Jason Day, both of whom were still in grade school when Woods won his first green jacket, react to the presence of a known predator right behind them on the leaderboard? Those holes that looked large enough to putt a basketball into, those greens that looked glass-flat, those fairways that looked broad enough to land a plane on -- all of them will tighten, inch by inch and yard by yard.Woods has absolutely nothing to lose; he's proven himself over and over here, and he's already exceeded expectations just by getting into the top three. McIlroy, Day, Rickie Fowler, Alvaro Quiros -- these guys are facing the test of their golfing lives. One way or another, we're going to see history made this weekend.Sleep tight, Rory.--For the finest in Masters coverage, follow Devil Ball Golf all week long on Facebook right here and on Twitter right here at @jaybusbee.--

14 Vote(s)

After every round this week, we here at Devil Ball will give you a quick recap of the day, with our thoughts on some of the best, and worst, performances of the day. Follow us on Facebook for Masters news throughout the week, and on Twitter for up to the minute reactions. Now, onto Friday's round, where a certain you-know-who jumped up the leaderboard ...Round of the Day: Just watching Jason Day play on Friday was a treat to anyone that has ever aspired to hit the little white ball down the long, green fairway. Day made eight birdies en route to his 64 that jumped him to second place at the Masters, and it was as good as it sounded, highlighted by a tap-in birdie on the 18th that drew smiles from the entire threesome. (A side note: props to the green jackets at Augusta National for giving us some extremely entertaining groups on Thursday and Friday. It really enhanced the Masters experience.)Biggest Surprise: What, Tiger Woods posting a 6-under 66 wasn't a surprise? You were expecting that to happen? Woods looked lost on his first three holes, very similar to how he went around Augusta on Thursday, but he turned it on when he got to the eighth, and from that point forward, was the story of Friday. His second shot into 18 was vintage Woods, and dropping that birdie putt really has people thinking he's going to make a weekend charge.Biggest Disappointment: It has to go to Phil Mickelson, who has yet to get anything going on two great scoring days at Augusta National. Lefty made four bogeys over his first 11 holes, and then failed to birdie both the par-5s on the back that everyone seemed to be tearing up. With the gap between Phil and the leaders continuing to grow, it seems that his run at a fourth green jacket might have to wait until 2012.What to Look for on Saturday: If you aren't excited for the third round of this tournament, you either hate golf, or hate life, or possibly both. This is exactly why major championships are the best tournaments around. We have two guys at the top of the leaderboard that, combined, wouldn't be old enough to play on the Champions Tour, and we have Tiger lurking behind. Besides that, Sergio Garcia has thrown his name in the mix, and guys like Ricky Barnes and Fred Couples are just a solid round away from the final group. If you're looking for something specifically, watch how Rory McIlroy and Jason Day handle the pressures of being in the final group at the Masters. It's a different beast, and with Tiger teeing off right before them, it wouldn't surprise me if they came out rattled on the first few holes.More Masters coverage on Yahoo!
Augusta may be the most hallowed of golf temples, a vast expanse of green, but there's no room anywhere for sentimentality. Some of the biggest names of bygone years are watching the rest of the proceedings from the exact same spot as the rest of us.Those on the outs include former champions here such as Sandy Lyle, Mike Weir, Ben Crenshaw, Jose Maria Olazabal and others. That's not surprising, since the Masters invites back past champions who are long past their green jacket-winning days. However, there are some younger big names in the mix, major winners like Louis Oosthuizen, Padraig Harrington and Lucas Glover. Martin Kaymer, the world No. 1, didn't exactly do his ranking proud with his abysmal Augusta play. And Graeme McDowell, pictured there at right, he of the dramatic U.S. Open win and the rundown of Tiger Woods in the Chevron in December, couldn't make a putt to save his life on Friday, when one single birdie would have had him playing through the weekend.[Related: Tiger roars into contention ]Yes, with both Woods and Phil Mickelson in the mix, as well as Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia, the Masters will be long on Sunday star power. Still, that illustrious list of MCs* above shows us that success among the azaleas can be fleeting indeed.*-That would be "missed cuts." We can't attest to their rhyming skills, though we bet Sandy Lyle could rock a mic.--For the finest in Masters coverage, follow Devil Ball Golf all week long on Facebook right here and on Twitter right here at @jaybusbee.--More Masters coverage on Yahoo!
Over the next few days, we're destined to read every type of Manny Ramirez article, from columns denouncing his drug use to listicles comprised solely of the top "Manny Being Manny" moments. We're also going to read plenty about his prodigious talents in the righthand batter's box. It's an approach that ESPN's David Schoenfield just started on his SweetSpot blog with a case for why Ramirez should ultimately be elected to Cooperstown.Writes Schoenfield:Manny being Manny became a joke, but Manny the hitter was no joke. He worked pitchers, finessed at-bats, remembered what got him out earlier in games and was ready to deliver some big-time damage if the pitcher tried the same approach again. He's one of the greatest right-handed hitters of all time, one of baseball's supreme RBI guys, a terrific playoff performer and - yes - perhaps the most iconoclastic player of the past quarter-century.Indeed, the only hitter who was more consistently feared or written about over the last 20 years was Barry Bonds. And just like Bonds did with his involvement in BALCO, Ramirez and his two failed drug tests are pushing us into the unfortunate territory of reconciling the talent and ability we watched up close with his cheating and drug use. Like Schoenfield, I can appreciate the moments I spent watching Ramirez hit. He mashed the ball in Cleveland, helped Boston win its first two World Series titles since 1918 and put together an unbelievable second half of baseball in Los Angeles less than three years ago. What's more, he falls into that rare category of hitters who hit homers while I was in attendance and I can still replay, nay, feel their exact scenes - the moments before them, the moments after them - just by closing my eyes.Maybe you know what I'm talking about. For my Barry Bonds homer, it was a rocket to right centerfield at Pac Bell Park- career homer No. 639 - off St. Louis pitcher Garrett Stephenson on a random Monday night in 2003. I had just tried garlic fries for the first time. For Mark McGwire, it was him hitting the 48th and 49th home runs of his 1998 season as I sat high in Wrigley Field's upper deck, sipping a beer I had just bought with my first fake ID.And for Manny, the moment came in 2005. The Chicago White Sox were in the middle of their first World Series title season since 1917 and the Red Sox were coming to town in for a four-game weekend series in mid July. The first game was on a Thursday night and my brother scored tickets down low on the left field line. It was a good and festive crowd, bolstered by the nation of Red Sox fans who spring up wherever their team travels. Both teams were in first place. It was also a weird game. An early White Sox lead turned into a mid-game Red Sox lead and Curt Schilling was working out of the bullpen after coming back from injury. A RBI double from Joe Crede with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning tied the game at five and either a late White Sox winner or extra innings seemed like

12 Vote(s)

Think about some of the great American amateur performances we've had the privilege of watching over the last 10 or so years at the Masters. Matt Kuchar, Casey Wittenberg, and Ryan Moore come to mind when you think of guys that took hold of a rare opportunity on golf's biggest and made the most of it.But aside from those those three, it's hard to find a recent American amateur that has done anything in the last 5 or so years. If you're wondering why that is, it's because we haven't had the privilege of watching one on the weekend since 2005, when Moore and Luke List made the cut. With Peter Uihlein, Lion Kim, Nathan Smith, and David Chung all missing the cut, the drought is now six years, which is an amazing stat when you consider guys like Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson are blazing a new trail for young American players on the PGA Tour.[Related: Tiger roars into contention ]For some reason, that success hasn't translated to success at Augusta National for some of the game's up-and-coming amateurs. Uihlein was the most likely to make the cut, but a 5-over 77 on Friday derailed his chances, leaving David Chung as the top American player at 4-over for the week. The big question is, why has it been so tough for American amateurs to make the cut? It's hard to say, but the pressure of playing in such a big tournament has to weigh on them. But with youngsters like Matteo Manassero and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, who made the cut this year, having success, it's obvious all amateurs aren't struggling. For now, we'll have to wait another year to see if a crop of young American players can break the drought at the Masters.More Masters coverage on Yahoo!
--For the finest in Masters coverage, follow Devil Ball Golf all week long on Facebook right here and on Twitter right here at @shanebacon.--He's teased us with this before. Tiger Woods, coming out in a big tournament and posting a good round of golf to get everyone buzzing that this is the day he's finally back in the game, shot a 6-under 66 in the second round to sit three back of Rory McIlroy. But for some reason, Friday at Augusta National was different. It wasn't the Chevron World Challenge, or his opening round here last year. The way he was swinging was different. His swagger was back. He was standing over golf shots and you got that old feeling in your gut like, "Man, he's about to toast this golf shot," even before he made his swing.[Related: Complete Masters leaderboard ]It didn't quite start out that way. Tiger hit his opening tee shot in a fairway bunker on his way to a bogey, and followed that up with a flubbed second shot on the short par-4 3rd hole on his way to another square. He made another bogey on the seventh hole, but after that, it was vintage Tiger. He started hitting golf shots and rolling putts like he used to. When Tiger really had it going, when he was really, really dominant, it was the lengthy par putts that he seemed to always make, and that was the case on the par-4 11th, when Tiger left his birdie putt well short, and then rolled the slippery par putt in the center of the hole followed by a fist pump. And then the 18th. For a guy that for so many years seemed to always make the putt that mattered on the final green, Thursday's birdie putt on 18, that failed to even hit the hole, was a perfect example of Tiger 2.0. Friday was different. A wayward tee shot, followed by a creative 8-iron around the trees, and a putt dead center for birdie, followed by, you guessed it, a fist pump.So it goes back to the same question we've been asking for so many months I can't even count them all; can Tiger finally close the deal? Can he actually win this event? It sure seems like if you had to pick a name at the top of that leaderboard, Tiger is as logical as they come. He's won here before, and unlike the two youngsters ahead of him, he knows how to deal with the weekend pressures at the Masters. He will be out one group before McIlroy and Jason Day on Saturday, and he will be the one in charge of directing the roars. The question is, will his swing come out for another day, or will it disappear like it has so many times the last two years?More Masters coverage on Yahoo!
